Beckett Sennecke scored a short-handed goal with just 0.1 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, helping the Anaheim Ducks secure a 4-3 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.
Sennecke’s tying goal came when he sent the puck into the crease, and Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson inadvertently knocked it into his own net just before time expired. “Sennecke shoveled the puck into Pittsburgh’s crease and a sliding Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson gloved it into the net just before the horn, tying it 3-3.”
Ville Husso made 45 saves for Anaheim, while Jackson LaCombe and Troy Terry also scored for the Ducks, who have now won three consecutive games and four of their last five. Leo Carlsson scored in the first round of the shootout for Anaheim, and Husso stopped attempts by Tommy Novak, Sidney Crosby, and Ville Koivunen.
For Pittsburgh, Karlsson recorded two assists. Anthony Mantha, Noel Acciari, and Novak each scored goals. The Penguins are now 1-7 in games that go to overtime this season. Arturs Silovs made 25 saves for Pittsburgh.
Acciari opened scoring for Pittsburgh at 9:49 of the first period with his first goal of the season after winning a face-off that rebounded off Connor Dewar’s skate back to him for a wrist shot from the left circle.
LaCombe tied it early in the second period by carrying the puck down from the point and lifting a sharp-angle wrist shot over Silovs’ right shoulder. Chris Kreider had an opportunity to give Anaheim a lead on a short-handed breakaway but was denied by Silovs’ pad save.
Terry put Anaheim ahead at 14:10 of the second period with his eighth goal of the season on a wrist shot from near the bottom of the right circle under the crossbar.
Novak tied it again late in the second period after following up his own rebound and scoring from below the goal line off Husso’s back.
Mantha gave Pittsburgh a late lead in regulation with a power-play goal at 16:05 of the third period when his pass attempt deflected off Husso’s stick into Anaheim’s net.
Sennecke then forced overtime with his last-second effort before Anaheim secured victory in the shootout.
