The Anaheim Ducks secured a shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins after Beckett Sennecke scored a game-tying goal with just one second left in regulation. This marks the latest game-tying goal in franchise history, matching a record set by Scott Niedermayer on November 21, 2008.
Sennecke, who currently leads all NHL rookies in goals and points, became only the fourth player ever—and the first since 2000—to score a shorthanded goal at 19:59 of the third period. He is also just the second teenager to achieve this feat in league history. “Sennecke became the first rookie in NHL history to score a game-tying goal in the final second of regulation while shorthanded, the seventh rookie to score a goal that late in regulation ever.”
In addition to his dramatic tying goal, Sennecke recorded an assist during the first period, resulting in his third consecutive multi-point game. He is now the first Ducks teenager with three straight games of multiple points and joins Matvel Michkov and Will Smith as one of only three teenagers across the NHL to accomplish this over the past five years. Paul Kariya remains the only Ducks rookie with more consecutive multi-point games.
With his current tally of 26 points (10 goals and 16 assists) through 30 games, Sennecke has become the fastest Ducks teenager to reach at least 25 points, surpassing Mason McTavish’s previous mark set during the 2022-23 season.
Goaltender Ville Husso contributed significantly by stopping 44 out of 47 shots and denying all three Pittsburgh attempts during the shootout. This win marked Husso’s third straight victory and improved his season record to five wins and two losses.
The Ducks now have eleven comeback wins this season—tied for most in the NHL—and are off to their best start since their strong performance during the 2014-15 campaign.
