On Friday, Representatives Young Kim, Ryan Zinke, and Madeleine Dean introduced the AUKUS Reform for Military Optimization and Review Act (ARMOR) Act. This bipartisan bill aims to enhance the Australia, United Kingdom, and United States (AUKUS) trilateral security partnership.
The ARMOR Act seeks to streamline the expedited review process for AUKUS-related transfers, exports, and activities involving advanced technologies and defense articles. Congresswoman Kim stated that “the AUKUS trilateral security partnership protects our national security and projects shared strength,” adding that the act will ensure that “AUKUS Pillar II works as intended and with speed to deter pressing security threats.”
Congresswoman Dean emphasized the importance of AUKUS since its creation in 2021 in countering threats from China and promoting a free Indo-Pacific region. She noted that the legislation would strengthen arms sales to allies while maintaining Congressional oversight over sensitive U.S. technologies. Dean expressed gratitude for working with Representative Kim on this bipartisan initiative.
Congressman Zinke highlighted the special relationship between the United States, UK, and Australia, which extends beyond shared language. He remarked that expediting defense sales would bolster partnerships and enhance America’s global strength. Zinke voiced support for this bipartisan legislation from Congresswoman Kim.
Formed in 2021, AUKUS is a security pact focusing on two main pillars: helping Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines (Pillar I) and developing advanced military technologies (Pillar II). The ARMOR Act specifically addresses Pillar II.
