A new California law has been enacted to regulate parking near crosswalks, aiming to enhance street safety across Anaheim and the entire state. Known as “daylighting,” this law is designed to improve visibility for drivers, walkers, and cyclists by clearing space around crosswalks.
The legislation aligns California with over 40 other states that have similar regulations in place. Effective since January, the law prohibits parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk or 15 feet where curb extensions are present. These restrictions also apply near fire stations and intersections.
In Anaheim, city officials are implementing the law with a focus on education, discretion, and enforcement. Recognizing the challenges of limited parking space in many neighborhoods, Anaheim plans to educate residents about the new rules while issuing warnings to facilitate adjustment.
However, severe cases involving vehicles parked dangerously or obstructing visibility will be subject to citation and enforcement actions. Residents can report serious parking issues through Anaheim Anytime, an online tool for addressing neighborhood concerns such as parking violations and graffiti.
Every report submitted via Anaheim Anytime is tracked and addressed promptly, although complex issues may require more time for resolution. The daylighting provision has been added to the California Vehicle Code as section 22500(n).
