U.S. Representative Young Kim has expressed approval for the Department of Education’s recent initiative aimed at tackling identity theft and fraud within federal student aid programs. This move is set to take effect for the fall 2025 semester.
The announcement from the Department follows a letter led by Rep. Kim, which called for a federal investigation into fraudulent community college applications that exploit financial aid, thereby misusing both federal and state taxpayer funds.
Recent data indicates that 34 percent of community college applications submitted in the previous calendar year were fraudulent. Rep. Kim highlighted the severity of this issue, stating, “Last year, more than one in every three California community college applications was fake, leading to financial aid fraud stealing $10 million in federal taxpayer dollars and $3 million from our state. This is not only a flagrant waste of taxpayer dollars but also deprives real students in need of receiving student aid they need to receive an education.”
Congresswoman Kim expressed her gratitude towards the Department of Education for responding to calls for increased transparency and accountability on behalf of taxpayers.
