Mikael Granlund scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with one second left in overtime, as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Calgary Flames 3-2 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday, Mar. 27.
The victory marks Anaheim’s fourth consecutive win and keeps them atop the Pacific Division with 86 points. The Ducks have earned at least one point in their last six games, going 5-0-1 during that stretch.
Granlund’s decisive goal came on a power play when he converted a pass from defenseman John Carlson from the high slot, beating Calgary goalie Devin Cooley. Carlson finished with two assists and Ville Husso made 23 saves for Anaheim.
For Calgary, Blake Coleman and Matvei Gridin scored goals while Olli Maatta contributed two assists. Cooley stopped 30 shots for the Flames, who are now nine points behind in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Flames have gone 4-0-1 so far on their current six-game homestand.
The game featured several notable moments: an early three-on-none break by Calgary failed to produce a shot; Yegor Sharangovich appeared to open scoring but had his goal overturned due to offside; and both teams traded leads throughout regulation before Granlund tied it late in the third period on another power-play effort.
Anaheim played without forwards Jansen Harkins (upper-body injury) and Troy Terry (lower-body injury), while defenseman Radko Gudas exited during the second period with an undisclosed issue.
The result has implications for both teams’ playoff hopes as Anaheim maintains its division lead while Calgary faces increasing pressure to close their wild-card gap.
