The House of Representatives has passed a resolution, H.Res.516, led by Representative Young Kim (CA-40), condemning the recent violent riots in Los Angeles and commending law enforcement for their efforts to maintain safety. The resolution recognizes the right to peaceful assembly while unequivocally condemning violence against law enforcement at all levels.

Representative Kim emphasized the importance of distinguishing between constitutional rights and criminal activities, stating, “Peaceful protests are a constitutional right, but vandalism, looting, violence, and other crimes are not.” She expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and called for collective efforts to restore peace.

The resolution was supported by several members of the California Republican delegation, including Reps. Ken Calvert (CA-41), David Valadao (CA-22), Vince Fong (CA-20), Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), Darrell Issa (CA-48), Tom McClintock (CA-05), Jay Obernolte (CA-23), and Kevin Kiley (CA-03).

Congressman Vince Fong highlighted the obligation to protect communities and law enforcement officers: “These are not peaceful protests, and we must draw a definitive line against such dangerous and destructive actions that have no place in our society.”

Congressman Kiley criticized sanctuary policies as contributing factors to the unrest: “This is the time for California to do away with its disastrous Sanctuary State status.”

Rep. LaMalfa described the events as a riot rather than a protest: “Cars were burned, businesses looted… Law and order are still a public priority.”

Congressman Valadao reaffirmed support for law enforcement: “This resolution reaffirms our commitment to standing with law and order.”

Congressman Obernolte stressed accountability for those inciting chaos: “We stand with the officers who put themselves in harm’s way to restore order.”

Congressman Calvert stated that violence has no place on American streets: “There is no room for riots and other violence in our streets.”

Finally, Congressman McClintock underscored the need for justice: “We must stand firmly with law enforcement… ensure that those who seek to destroy our communities are held accountable.”
