On July 3, 2025, the United States Postal Service Post Office located at 28081 Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo was officially renamed the Major Megan McClung Post Office Building. This renaming was part of a bipartisan effort led by U.S. Representative Young Kim to honor Major McClung’s service and sacrifice.
The ceremony included speeches from Mission Viejo Postmaster Robert Garcia, Mayor Bob Ruesch, Supervisor Don Wagner, and Michael McClung, Major McClung’s brother. They all spoke about her dedication and ultimate sacrifice during her military service.
Major Megan McClung grew up in Mission Viejo and attended local schools before graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995 and Boston University in 2006. She served for 11 years in the United States Marine Corps with humility and commitment. Her life ended while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, making her the first female Marine officer killed in the Iraq War and the first woman graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy to die on duty.
Her military honors include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.
“Major Megan McClung’s legacy speaks as loudly as her life,” stated Rep. Young Kim. “While we can never truly repay her for her sacrifice, I am glad that her legacy is preserved for generations to come in Mission Viejo.”
H.R. 3608 was a bipartisan bill led by Rep. Kim that passed both houses of Congress unanimously before being signed into law in 2024.
