Anaheim has been selected to host indoor volleyball events for the 2028 Summer Olympics, with matches taking place at the Honda Center. This venue, a city-owned arena with seating for more than 18,000 spectators, was chosen by the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Mayor Ashleigh Aitken expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Olympic volleyball is coming to the right place. Anaheim has a long, storied history with volleyball and is the best place for the indoor sport in the 2028 summer games. We have supported Honda Center’s bid and are confident in Anaheim’s proven ability to host a great competition for athletes and fans from around the world." She highlighted Anaheim's extensive experience in hosting major events, including weekly hockey, baseball, entertainment, and conventions.
Anaheim has served as a training ground for the U.S. national volleyball teams since 2006, with numerous athletes from these programs achieving Olympic success in past games. In 2023, the Anaheim Convention Center hosted the Men’s Volleyball Nations League, featuring Olympic athletes from various countries.
The 2028 games will mark Anaheim's second time as an Olympics host city. The city previously hosted wrestling events during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Honda Center, known for hosting the Anaheim Ducks and various sports and entertainment events, was the site of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball tournament in 2024.
As preparations for LA 2028 continue, organizers are working on finalizing a host-city agreement with Anaheim. Anticipating economic benefits, Anaheim foresees increases in hotel stays, theme park visits, and local commerce, which contribute significantly to funding public safety and city operations.
Honda Center, to be known as the Arena in Anaheim for the games, is accessible via Anaheim’s ARTIC transit center and sits near major freeways. The surrounding area is undergoing development into OCVibe, which will feature new entertainment and commercial facilities.
More specifics about the upcoming volleyball events at Honda Center will be announced in due course.
